The Cat Empire UK tour, infectious as a flu pandemic

January 10, 2011 Jazz, Pop Rock, ticket

The Cat Empire is better defined by what they are not: pop, rock, jazz, ska, alternative, salsa. While none of the labels quite fit the band, a little of each, mixed together, are the best possible definition of its sound. The eclecticism is reflex of the band’s diverse background – classical, jazz and rock musicians are part of the sextet, often increased by the fabulous The Empire Horns.

Formed in Melbourne a decade ago, The Cat Empire is on its way to a 11-date UK tour that promises to turn their cult status into world domination. They will perform their 800th live show in the UK while promoting their fourth album, Cinema, according to many their best and most consistent work to date. From the opening track the album is catching, dark lyrics combined with uplifting music and bursting with the spirit of Summer days.

The best known Australian act since the Minogue sisters is famous not only for moving effortlessly between genres but also for the mind-blowing live performances with improvisations and unexpected turns. And yet The Cat Empire sets are highly danceable and full of sing-along opportunities. It’s a bit carnival, a bit jazz festival and a bit gypsies fete before Sarkozy. October will warm up a little while Felix Riebl and co are in the UK.

The Cat Empire UK tour dates: Bournemouth (Oct 19), Bristol (Oct 21, 22), London (Oct 23), Leeds (Oct 25), Manchester (Oct 26), Glasgow (Oct 27).
